NC State Ring

A tradition to treasure.

A Tradition of Pride and Connection

The NC State class ring is a symbol of achievement, tradition and lifelong connection to the Wolfpack family. Designed to capture the essence of the NC State experience, the ring tells a story of shared moments, deep-rooted pride and the legacy that unites all who call NC State home.

Eligible NC State students will have completed 60 undergraduate credits (junior status) or are enrolled in a graduate program. Students wear their ring with the university name (Block S) facing inward, symbolizing their ongoing journey. After graduating, alumni turn their ring with the university name (Block S) facing outward, symbolizing their accomplishments, future path and lifelong connections to NC State. The turning of the ring takes place during the university commencement ceremony.

This tradition dates back to 2005, when a dedicated committee of students, alumni, faculty and staff created the NC State Ring Collection to serve as a timeless representation of what it means to be part of the Pack. Every element of the ring is intentional, honoring the university’s history and the experiences that define the NC State journey:

  • The Memorial Belltower – Anchored by 19 bricks, representing the first graduating class of 19 students.
  • North Carolina’s Motto: Esse Quam Videri – “To be rather than to seem,” a reflection of NC State’s commitment to solving real-world challenges.
  • Holladay Hall’s Open Doors – A symbol of inclusion and opportunity, welcoming students and alumni alike.
  • The Wolfpack Spirit – A proud pack of wolves charges forward before the university mace, embodying leadership and tradition.
  • Twenty-One Bricks – Commemorating the size of the original first class to enroll at NC State.
  • The Block S Logo – Surrounded by the university’s name and founding year, grounding the ring in NC State’s rich history.
  • Personalized Details – A banner featuring your college, making your ring as individual as your NC State experience.

Ring Traditions

At NC State, the class ring is more than just a symbol, it’s a connection to the heart of the Wolfpack legacy. Two powerful traditions, Fellowship of the Ring at the Belltower and The Celebration of Pack Traditions, honor the meaning behind this emblem and the incredible journey it represents.

Fellowship of the Ring at the Belltower

Students and alumni have the opportunity to have their ring spend a night in the sacred Alumni Memorial Belltower, the iconic symbol of our university. Rings are placed in the Belltower’s shrine room, where they are said to be visited by three benevolent spirits: the Spirits of Wolfpack Past, Present and Future. These spirits infuse each ring with the values that define every NC State graduate — pride, perseverance and a dedication to making an impact.

This special tradition also connects your ring to the generations of graduates who came before you, creating a powerful bond across time. It’s no wonder this moment is included in “54 Things to Do Before Graduating From NC State.”

Rings are presented to their owner the following day at The Celebration of Pack Traditions.

The Celebration of Pack Traditions

The Wolfpack Legacy Ceremony is a celebration of the traditions, values and connections that define NC State, honoring the lifelong bond shared by students and alumni. This event highlights the achievements of the Traditions Keepers award recipients, who are recognized for their dedication to preserving university traditions; the Mathews Medal Award recipients, celebrated for their outstanding leadership and service; and features the Presentation of the Rings.

Together, these ceremonies provide students with a sense of belonging and pride, creating memories that will tie them to campus and the Wolfpack family for a lifetime.
