Bio

Meet Dr. Jing Feng

Dr. Jing Feng is a Professor in the Human Factors and Applied Cognition Program at North Carolina State University. She earned her B.S. in Applied Psychology from Zhejiang University and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Toronto. She completed postdoctoral training in cognitive neuroscience of aging at the Rotman Research Institute and studied human factors in driving at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Feng’s research integrates theories of attention with practical applications in human factors. She studies spatial, selective, and sustained attention. Her work examines individual differences, age-related changes, and cognitive training effects. She applies these insights to aging, driver safety, driver distraction, automation interaction, and information displays. Her work aims to improve real-world safety, especially in driving contexts and age-related cognitive issues.

Her contributions have earned numerous honors, including NC State’s Outstanding Junior Faculty Award (2016-2017) and the Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentor Award (2023). In 2021, she received the Earl Alluisi Award for Early Career Achievement from the APA Division 21. In 2023, she became an APA Fellow.

Dr. Feng has published widely on age-related differences in driver behavior, attention during walking, and improving hazard detection in older drivers. She mentors students and collaborates on projects that bridge cognitive psychology and applied ergonomics. Her work continues to influence cognitive psychology, human factors, and driver safety.

Her expertise spans spatial and sustained attention, age-related cognitive changes, driver safety, and designing systems to enhance attentional processing. She remains a leading voice in cognitive psychology and human factors research. Dr. Feng’s interdisciplinary work provides valuable insights for both academic and applied fields. Her innovative research bridges theory and practical applications, improving safety and human performance.

Area(s) of Expertise

Dr. Feng conducts research integrating theories of attention and relevant applications in human factors. On the theoretical side, she studies attention across the visual field, individual differences and age-related changes in attention, as well as the effects of cognitive training. On the practical side, she applies these theoretical findings to understand aging and driving, driver distraction, driver-automation interaction, and the design of information displays.
