Before joining ISE, she was a postdoctoral research associate at the Healthcare Systems Engineering Institute at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Chen\u2019s research will focus on integrating new technologies, like virtual reality (VR), into the healthcare system and safety research. \u201cThe goal is to improve the health and well-being of a\u00a0wider range of populations,\u201d she\u00a0explained.<\/p>\n<p>Advantages of virtual reality include flexibility and cost\u2014it\u2019s a programmable environment that can be designed to meet the specific needs of the individual patient. \u201cIf a patient needs to perform an upper body rehab task like reaching up and taking a\u00a0book off of the shelf, I don\u2019t have to go out and buy a book and a bookshelf,\u201d pointed out Dr. Chen. \u201cI can just program them into the VR environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Within the next 10 to 15 years, she hopes that her research will give a greater number of people access to healthcare, especially patients who struggle with mobility or live in remote\u00a0locations. \u201cI don\u2019t think this will ever replace your doctor,\u201d said Dr. Chen. \u201cBut it will give both physicians and patients more options for giving and receiving quality care in real time.\u201d\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"clearfix\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-4 pull-right\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ise.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/xu-xu-faculty-image-500x500-01.jpg\" alt=\"Xu XU | Assistant Professor\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9615\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-8\">\n<strong>Xu Xu<\/strong> received his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering right here at NC State. Before returning to ISE, he was a research scientist at the Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety where he received awards for best paper and outstanding scientific contribution many times.<\/p>\n<p>Although he had great success in the business world, Dr. Xu had a desire to return to academia. So when the position became available at NC State, it was a \u201cno-brainer\u201d to move his family to Raleigh. \u201cBoston was too cold for me,\u201d joked Dr. Xu.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Xu\u2019s research will focus on occupational biomechanics, the study of movement and force on the body to help rid the workplace of troublesome aches and pains. The goal is to improve quality and safety for people on the job.<\/p>\n<p>His first order of business is to set up a cutting-edge occupational biomechanics laboratory within the ISE department.
