Now, they fund scholarships to support future NC State engineers.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a packed lecture hall at NC State\u2019s Harrelson Hall 25 years ago, Amy Reamer and Tronda Lee sat beside each other in an ST 371 statistics class. Their professor was known for his strict no-talking rule, but that didn\u2019t stop them. Instead, they passed notes back and forth in Reamer\u2019s notebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI still have that notebook somewhere,\u201d Reamer recalled with a smile. \u201cWe studied together, started tailgating for Wolfpack football games together, and the rest is friendship history!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That small moment sparked a lifelong friendship. From their love of NC State athletics to their shared passion for various hobbies, Reamer and Lee quickly realized they were kindred spirits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have a lot in common, from our love of Wolfpack sports to our affinities for mathematics, organizing and traveling!\u201d Reamer said. \u201cTronda is from Salisbury, NC, where my grandmother was born and raised, and I always thought that was such a neat connection.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"785\" src=\"https:\/\/webpublishing.oit.ncsu.edu\/ise-ncsu-edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/353\/2025\/02\/from-passing-notes-to-paying-it-forward-02-2025-01.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/webpublishing.oit.ncsu.edu\/ise-ncsu-edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/353\/2025\/02\/from-passing-notes-to-paying-it-forward-02-2025-01.webp 1000w, https:\/\/webpublishing.oit.ncsu.edu\/ise-ncsu-edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/353\/2025\/02\/from-passing-notes-to-paying-it-forward-02-2025-01-300x236.webp 300w, https:\/\/webpublishing.oit.ncsu.edu\/ise-ncsu-edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/353\/2025\/02\/from-passing-notes-to-paying-it-forward-02-2025-01-768x603.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tronda Lee (left) and Amy Reamer (right) tailgating outside of Carter-Finley Stadium<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond common interests, their friendship has been built on loyalty and kindness. \u201cShe is the most loyal friend you could ever have,\u201d Reamer said. \u201cIf you need something, she is there in no time at all with Panera soup in tow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Lee, their bond goes even deeper. \u201cThere are so many factors that have led to my lifelong friendship with Amy,\u201d she said. \u201cHowever, if I have to pinpoint something, it would be the alignment of our moral compass and values.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their friendship, which started with simple notes in class, has stood the test of time. Reamer hopes her children will one day have a friendship as meaningful as hers with Lee. \u201cI count her friendship as one of my most treasured blessings,\u201d she said. \u201cI hope my kids are lucky enough to have a Tronda in their life someday\u2014someone who is funny, smart and a passionate community advocate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paying it Forward<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>But their bond goes beyond friendship. Their shared experience in NC State\u2019s Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) shaped their careers and inspired them to give back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI owe pretty much all of my professional success to the ISE department,\u201d Reamer said. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t be who I am today without the opportunities afforded to me in ISE at NC State.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reamer recalls how the support from faculty, staff and fellow students\u2014especially their academic advisor, Clarence Smith\u2014made a lasting impact. \u201cAs many alums will attest, I am particularly grateful for the support of Clarence Smith, the department\u2019s academic advisor. Now, they want to give others the same opportunity. \u201cAs a student, I was fortunate to receive financial support from the College of Engineering and ISE, which enabled me to focus primarily on my studies,\u201d Reamer said. \u201cI hope our scholarship affords the same opportunity to a current ISE student\u2014to be able to treat their education as a full-time job and take advantage of co-curricular opportunities that maximize their collegiate experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also encourage students to build strong relationships with mentors. \u201cMake connections with your professors and academic advisors by visiting them during office hours.\u201d Reamer said. \u201cDuring those visits, I learned about ISE content certainly, but I also enjoyed getting to know them as people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee added, \u201cStay curious! Actively question assumptions to expose hidden opportunities and to refine your understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From passing notes in class to funding a scholarship for future engineers, Reamer and Lee have come full circle.
