Web Design and Development
Need help building your website? There are people at NC State who are ready and eager to help!
The first step is to have a consistent vocabulary and to clarify what kind of help you’re looking for. You may need assistance with one or more of the following:
Some projects will require a combination of all of these, and may involve cooperation between multiple teams on campus.
Note: If you choose to make use of an outside vendor for any production, design, or development services, you must follow our vendor guidelines.
Your organization’s digital strategy is a plan for how you communicate across all digital media—including your website. Digital strategy is about making sure the blog posts and pages on your website, your social media posts, and the email newsletters you send all support your communications goals.
University Communications and Marketing provides digital strategy services for campus, along with copywriting, art direction, graphic design, and more. Your college or unit-level communications team may also have resources to support your digital strategy.
In many cases, when someone says they need help with “web design,” what they really mean is “web production.” Web production is building pages and other content for your website using the tools included in Web Publishing.
The difference between web design and web production is that web production doesn’t require writing new code. You often don’t need any custom code to build engaging page layouts and highlight important content. But web production does require knowledge of usability and accessibility best practices, a good aesthetic sense, and a strong understanding of the tools and capabilities available in the Web Publishing service.
To learn the tools and tricks of web production, we recommend attending training workshops provided by the Office of Information Technology and University Communications. Your college or unit-level IT team may also provide training, and your college or unit-level communications team may have resources to help with web production work.
If you need additional guidance, please submit a support ticket with a detailed description of what you’re working on. Where possible, OIT staff will provide step-by-step guidance to help you build your pages. Bigger requests may require a project contract or may be referred to University Communications for additional guidance.
Custom web design
Custom web design is giving your website a unique look and feel, beyond what’s possible using existing tools. Custom web design work typically requires writing code for a new WordPress theme.
You may need custom web design if your website doesn’t have to follow the NC State brand, or if you have specific communication or workflow needs that extend the brand.
University Communications and Marketing provides web design services for campus. Your college or unit-level IT team may also do custom web design. Note that your website must be at the Custom service level in order to activate a custom WordPress theme.
Custom web development
Custom web development is adding additional functionality to your website. That might include something that visitors to your website see, or it might only be functionality that exists inside the WordPress dashboard.
You may need custom web development if you want to connect your website to another campus system or a third-party API, or if you want to change how core WordPress functionality works for your website.
The Office of Information Technology provides web development services for campus. Please submit a support ticket to begin the project planning process, and please include as much information as possible. Your college or unit-level IT team may also do custom web development. Note that your website must be at the Custom service level in order to activate a custom WordPress plugin.
