Intelligent Cognitive Ergonomics Lab

Intelligent cognitive ergonomics for a safer future. ICEL designs AI systems that enhance human abilities and human-AI collaboration.

Last Updated: 06/05/2025 | All information is accurate and still up-to-date

At the Intelligent Cognitive Ergonomics Lab (ICEL) at NC State University, led by Renran Tian, you explore ways to improve human-centered computing and intelligent systems. Here, you’ll learn how cognitive ergonomics and human-AI interaction work together to build systems that focus on human needs.

Through designing and testing smart systems that match human thinking, ICEL helps integrate AI smoothly into complex settings. This integration improves how well both humans and machines work together.

Research

ICEL’s research brings together ideas from cognitive psychology, ergonomics and artificial intelligence. This combination helps create systems that boost your abilities and ensure safety, usability and satisfaction. Key research areas include human-AI teamwork, social intelligence in AI, human behavior modeling and Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) computing. These projects support fields like automated driving, healthcare and other critical areas.

What is Cognitive Ergonomics?

Cognitive ergonomics focuses on how your mind interacts with tools, systems and environments to improve performance, safety and satisfaction. It studies how you think, remember and make decisions while solving problems or using technology in everyday situations. By carefully examining these mental processes, cognitive ergonomics helps create systems that align with how your brain naturally works. This alignment reduces errors, increases efficiency and boosts satisfaction in many tasks.

For example, cognitive ergonomics ensures that apps, machines and processes are straightforward and easy to understand. It also focuses on making tools user-friendly and less frustrating. This helps you save time and energy while completing tasks more effectively. Whether you are in school, at work or managing daily life, cognitive ergonomics adapts technology to meet your needs.

Additionally, cognitive ergonomics considers how people interact with complex systems such as medical devices or automated vehicles. Designing systems that fit how your brain processes information minimizes confusion and enhances usability. It improves how tools function, ensuring they work seamlessly with your natural abilities.

Ultimately, cognitive ergonomics empowers you to perform better using tools and systems designed specifically for human capabilities. It enables you to achieve your goals easily and confidently in any setting.
