Bio

Ed Addison is a Professor of the Practice in the Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at NC State University. He teaches graduate courses in artificial intelligence, engineering management, product management, entrepreneurship and managerial finance. Since joining NC State in 2011, he has taught students in engineering, computer science, biomedical engineering and business. As a result, he helps prepare future leaders to apply technology, innovation and AI to complex challenges.

Addison is an artificial intelligence executive, entrepreneur, educator and investor with more than 40 years of experience. Throughout his career, he has worked across industry, academia, healthcare and venture creation. His work has advanced artificial intelligence, healthcare innovation, engineering design and technology commercialization.

In addition, Addison has founded five technology companies, raised capital for four ventures and exited three successfully. He has served as a founder, CEO, CTO, board member and strategic advisor. Consequently, he has guided startups, venture capital organizations and large enterprises. His experience includes artificial intelligence, healthcare, biotechnology, software, advanced analytics and information technology.

Before joining academia, Addison held leadership positions at Westinghouse, Booz Allen Hamilton, Excalibur Technologies, Convera, Inclinix and IQVIA. He has also advised more than 20 emerging technology companies and several venture capital funds. In these roles, he supported technology strategy, innovation, commercialization and growth.

Today, Addison applies artificial intelligence to healthcare, drug discovery, engineering systems and enterprise transformation. He develops AI-driven solutions for biomedical research, real-world evidence and advanced AI architectures. Additionally, he serves on the boards and advisory boards of several AI and healthcare technology companies.

Addison earned recognition as an AI-150 Honoree for his contributions to the field of artificial intelligence. He has also received Entrepreneur of the Year honors twice. Furthermore, he led companies recognized on the Deloitte Fast 500. He frequently speaks on artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, healthcare innovation and emerging technologies. Throughout his career, he has led AI research initiatives, commercialized advanced technologies and launched new ventures that combine AI with human decision-making.
