Last Updated: 02/25/2026 | All information is accurate and still up-to-date

Are you up for the Challenge?

Our dual MIE/MBA degree helps you stand out in your industry. In addition, you gain skills that prepare you for leadership roles. Because the program emphasizes hands-on experiential learning, you build practical experience in more than one field.

You can earn both an MIE and an MBA in two years. However, you must meet the admission requirements for both programs. First, apply to the MIE program. Then, indicate on your application that you are interested in the Dual MIE MBA program. There is no box to check for MIE/MBA. Therefore, write your interest on a line on the first page of your application.

After we admit you to the MIE program, we will forward your application to the MBA program. Next, you must submit additional materials such as essays. For details, review the MBA website. In addition, you may contact Michael Dixon at mddixon@ncsu.edu with questions.

During your first year, you will focus mainly on core MBA courses. Then, during your second year, you will complete your core MIE courses.

As part of the MBA degree, you must complete a concentration. Current options include:

  • BioSciences Management
  • Entrepreneurship and Technology Commercialization
  • Financial Management
  • Innovation Management
  • Marketing Management
  • Supply Chain Management

Admission to the Program

Admission to this program follows a two step process. First, the ISE department reviews your qualifications for the MIE degree. Then, after we admit you to the MIE program, we send your application to the business school for MBA review. However, you must still apply separately to each program.

As a student in this dual program, you must follow all requirements for each degree. In addition, you must take the GRE for admission to the MIE program. For the MBA program, you must take either the GRE or the GMAT.

You will have access to the same career and program resources as other MBA and MIE students. Therefore, you can fully participate in advising, recruiting and professional development opportunities. Finally, you must pursue both degrees full-time, and you will pay the same tuition rates as MBA students.
