How do I schedule an appointment with an ISE advisor?
- First, review the ISE website, including this FAQ, before contacting an advisor. Many questions are already answered online.
- If you still need help, contact the ISE Ambassadors at ise-ambassadors@ncsu.edu. In many cases, they can quickly resolve advising questions.
- If an in person advising meeting is necessary, schedule an appointment through Navigate.
- To get started, visit the Advising page and follow the instructions to book an advising appointment.
Where do I get a copy of the 4-Year Curriculum Plan?
- Go to the BSIE 4-year Curriculum page to view the full plan.
- In addition, you can review course details and the recommended sequence for each semester.
What are the most common minors for ISE students?

How do I know which technical electives to take?
- First, review the permanently approved technical electives listed on the BSIE Curriculum page.
- In addition, check the ISE Areas of Study page for rotating technical electives offered each semester and for focus areas.
- However, do not attempt to enroll in ISE 495 unless you have a faculty sponsor.
- Also note that MA 405 no longer counts as a technical elective and should not be taken for that purpose.
- Likewise, not all ISE 589 Special Topics courses qualify as technical electives.
- Therefore, consult the BSIE Curriculum and ISE Areas of Study pages for the most current information and updates.
Which Engineering Science Elective should I take?
- The choice is up to you. However, several courses are especially popular among ISE students.
- Common options include:
- CE 225 Mechanics of Solids
- MAE 201 Thermal-Fluid Sciences
- MAE 208 Engineering Dynamics
- MAE 214 Solid Mechanics
- MAE 308 Fluid Mechanics
- Therefore, consider your interests and schedule when selecting the course that best fits your academic plan.
How do I declare my intention to participate in the ABM Program?
- The ABM program includes several milestones you must complete.
- First, review the program details on the Accelerated Bachelor/Master (ABM) page.
- You may apply once you have earned at least 75 credit hours but no more than 96 credit hours.
- In addition, you must have a minimum GPA of 3.5.
- Finally, complete the required ABM form and obtain signatures from the department’s directors of undergraduate and graduate studies.
How do I get credit for study abroad courses?
You should follow the instructions on the Study Abroad website.
How do I declare my intention to participate in the Health Systems Engineering Specialization Program (HSESP)?
- First, review the program details on the Health Systems Engineering Specialization Program page.
- To apply, you must have junior classification.
- In addition, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.3.
- You must also submit a resume, a letter of recommendation, a statement of interest and an unofficial transcript for consideration.
Courses – General
What should I do if I want to enroll in a course that is currently closed and does not have space on the waitlist?
- If the course is full and the waitlist is also full, complete the Enrollment Request Form.
- In the form, explain why it is important for you to enroll in the course.
- In addition, describe any alternative course options based on the classes you still need to complete your degree.
What happens if I get into one part of a paired course?
- ISE 215 and ISE 216 are paired courses and must be taken together as co-requisites.
- Likewise, ISE 315 and ISE 316 are paired courses and should also be taken at the same time.
- Therefore, if you enroll in one course, you should enroll in the other during the same semester.
- However, if you already received credit for ISE 215 after taking GC 120, consult your advisor or the Director of Undergraduate Programs for guidance.
Are the elective tracks mandatory?
- No, the elective tracks are not mandatory. Instead, they provide suggested groups of courses that fit well within a particular focus area.
- These tracks help you see which courses pair well together. As a result, they can guide your planning.
- However, you may mix and match courses from different tracks.
- As long as you meet the prerequisites, you may choose electives that best match your interests and goals.
Why do I have to take classes in other departments?
- First, some courses support prerequisites for later electives. For example, CE 214 is required for certain electives and should be taken early.
- In addition, courses such as ECE 331, MSE 200 and the engineering science elective broaden your engineering knowledge.
- As a result, you gain a more well rounded understanding of multiple engineering disciplines.
- Furthermore, these courses help the program meet ABET accreditation requirements.
What should I do to substitute a course or take a course that is not listed in the curriculum or on the list of approved electives?
- First, complete the Course Substitution Form.
- Then, submit the form to the Director of Undergraduate Programs for review and approval.
How do you find courses that are pre-approved for transfer credit?
- First, visit NC State’s transfer course equivalencies website.
- There, you can search for courses from other institutions that already have approved transfer credit at NC State.
How do I participate in the FE Prep Course?
- You should enroll in E 490.
Courses – Specific
Do I have to take E 102?
Yes, E 102 is required.
What happens if I have a conflict with EC 205 Fundamentals of Economics?
- If EC 205 is not available, you may take EC 201 Principles of Microeconomics instead.
- Alternatively, you may take ARE 201 Agricultural Economics to satisfy the requirement.
Are there any other options to satisfy the CE 214 requirement?
Yes, you may take MAE 206 instead of CE 214 to satisfy this requirement.
What happens if I have a conflict with MA 303 Linear Analysis?
- If you cannot take MA 303, you may take MA 341 Differential Equations instead.
- However, MA 303 is the preferred option because it better prepares you for ISE 361 and ISE 362.
- Even so, MA 341 remains an acceptable alternative if scheduling conflicts occur.
What happens if I take ST 370 instead of ST 371?
- If you take ST 370 instead of ST 371, you must take ST 372 as your second statistics course.
- To enroll in ST 372, complete the Statistics Department’s Enrollment Request Form.
- ISE PRO TIP: ST 370 is only available for students who transferred into ISE from another school or department.
How do I participate in ISE 495 Project Work in Industrial Engineering?
- First, secure a faculty sponsor before attempting to enroll in ISE 495.
- After you find a sponsor, work together to outline the project goals and expected deliverables.
- Then, complete the appropriate form and submit it to the Director of Undergraduate Programs for approval.
Why can’t ISE 520 “double count” for the ABM program?
- First, ISE 520 does not have a one to one replacement in the undergraduate curriculum.
- As a result, the course cannot be used as an undergraduate course for ABM credit.
- However, ISE 520 may count as a graduate course. Students are allowed up to six credit hours of graduate courses.
- In addition, ABET requirements prevent the course from counting as both an undergraduate and ABM course.

How do I find all of the ISE forms I may need?
- First, visit the Forms page in the myISE section of the website.
- There, you will find all undergraduate forms used by the department.
- Note that you must log in to this section using your Unity ID and password.
When does preregistration advising begin and how do I get advised?
- First, check the University registration calendar for official dates: https://studentservices.ncsu.edu/calendars/.
- In addition, the ISE department holds group advising sessions beginning the week after fall break and spring break.
- Times, locations and details for these sessions will be announced through email.
I tried to register before my enrollment date. MyPack will not allow me to enroll yet.
- First, check MyPack for your assigned enrollment day and time. Then, return and register after that time begins.
- If you still cannot register, contact your advisor for help.
What can you do if you do not meet the prerequisites for an ISE class?
- First, remember that ISE enforces prerequisites for all courses. Therefore, review the course catalog to confirm the required prerequisites.
- Next, check whether a transfer course meets the prerequisite. If it has not appeared on your degree audit, submit the Enrollment Request Form. Then, be ready to provide proof such as an unofficial transcript.
- Finally, if you have special circumstances, you may appeal to the ISE undergraduate advisory committee. Therefore, submit a written request and a copy of your MyPack degree audit to the Undergraduate Services Coordinator at ise-undergradoffice@ncsu.edu.
How can I get into a closed or restricted ISE course?
- First, complete the Enrollment Request Form. Then, submit it to the Undergraduate Services Coordinator at ise-undergradoffice@ncsu.edu.
How can I get into a class outside of the ISE department that is restricted?
- First, check whether the course has open seats reserved for specific majors. If so, attend class on the first day. Then, ask the instructor for permission to use one of the restricted seats.
- Next, if the instructor approves, complete a schedule revision form to add the course. You can pick up this form from the College of Engineering. Then, ask the instructor to sign the form.
- However, if the restriction requires departmental approval, contact the instructor to ask who can grant permission. Then, request approval from the department that teaches the course.
How do I get into a full class?
- First, add yourself to the course waitlist, if one is available. However, wait lists close on the first day of class. Also, they are deleted on the last day to add a class.
- Next, if the class is an ISE course, complete the Enrollment Request Form. Then, check your SuccessGPS profile for the results of your request.
- However, if the class is outside the ISE department, ask the instructor for permission to enroll. If the instructor approves, complete a schedule revision form. You can pick up this form from the College of Engineering.
- Finally, do not contact the instructor about full ISE classes. Instead, academic affairs staff review requests using factors such as capacity, priority and time to graduation.
Can my ISE adviser help me get into non-ISE courses?
- No. Only administrators in the department that offers the course can add or remove students from that class. Therefore, contact the department that teaches the course for help.
Holds
I have an advising hold on my account. How do I get it removed?
- First, visit the Advising page and review the listed steps. Then, follow those steps to request removal of your advising hold.
I have a hold on my account that is preventing me from registering. How can I get the hold removed?
- First, identify the type of hold on your account. The error message in MyPack usually explains the hold type.
- If you have an advising or registration hold, follow the ISE advising instructions to remove it.
- If you have an academic warning hold, complete an Academic Advisement Form. Then, bring the form to your adviser.
- If you have a non-payment or cashier’s office hold, pay the outstanding charges. Then, the University Cashier’s office can release the hold.
- However, if you have a student conduct hold, contact the Office of Student Conduct for more information.

Degree Progress and Minors
Degree Progress
What are the humanity/social science (GEP) requirements for the industrial and systems engineering curriculum?
- First, complete seven humanity or social science courses. Together, these courses equal 21 total credit hours.
- In addition, take one engineering ethics course required for ISE students.
- Also, take all humanity and social science GEP courses for a grade. Pass or fail options do not apply.
- Finally, review your degree audit for the approved course list. Because requirements depend on your start date, your audit is the most accurate source.
Where can I find help planning my remaining courses to make sure I graduate on time?
- First, use your degree audit as your main guide when you plan future courses.
- Next, if you plan to change the suggested course sequence, confirm that you will still meet future prerequisites.
- Also, remember that ISE courses are offered frequently. Most 200 and 300 level courses and some 400 level courses run twice each year.
- Finally, use the Plan of Work feature in MyPack. Then, map out your remaining courses to support timely graduation.
Minors
What is a good minor to complement my industrial and systems engineering major?
- First, consider popular non-humanity minors such as graphic communications, math or statistics.
- Also, a minor in computer programming can strengthen your technical skills.
- In addition, a business administration minor may help if you plan to pursue an MBA.
- Some students also choose a foreign language minor to broaden career opportunities.
- Finally, visit Academic Advising Services for more information about available minors.

Schedule
Can I take more than 18 credit hours in a regular semester?
- Potentially. However, first consult your academic advisor. Then, request approval before you enroll in more than 18 credit hours.
I want to add or drop a course after the last day to add or drop. Can I do this?
- First, review the official deadlines at https://studentservices.ncsu.edu/calendars/.
- However, if you want to add a course late, you must get approval from the instructor and the College of Engineering. Then, submit a schedule revision form from the College of Engineering.
- In contrast, late course drops are allowed only in certain extenuating circumstances. Therefore, submit a schedule revision form with a letter to the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs. Also, include supporting documents such as doctor or counseling notes.
- If you believe you have a valid reason for a late drop, first consult the University Counseling Center.
- Finally, review the university policy on late drops at http://policies.ncsu.edu/regulation/reg-02-05-04.
Courses
What are the differences between distance education and regular classes?
- First, you do not need to come to campus for distance education courses. However, some exams may still require attendance.
- If you live out of state, you may request exam accommodations.
- Next, distance education tuition varies by session. Therefore, check the University Cashier’s Office website for current pricing: http://treasurer.ofb.ncsu.edu/cashier/.
- Also, distance education courses meet the same curriculum requirements as regular courses.
- However, some on-campus courses appear as “internet” courses. These are regular courses taught online and billed as standard courses.
Are ISE courses always offered during the summer?
- No, ISE courses are not always offered during the summer.
- Instead, summer offerings depend on instructor availability and student demand.
- Therefore, if no instructor is available or demand is low, the course will not be offered.
How do I know what courses are offered in the summer?
- First, check the course schedule in MyPack. The university usually posts the spring and summer schedules at the same time.
- However, the department may add more summer courses later. Therefore, review the schedule again before the session begins.
How do I register for a class in the fall when I am taking the prerequisite in the summer?
- First, complete the summer course that satisfies the prerequisite.
- Then, wait until the credit appears on your transcript.
- After the credit posts, you can register for the fall course.
What are my senior design course sequence options?
- First, you may complete the ISE Capstone sequence. In this option, take ISE 498 and ISE 398 together in either the fall or spring semester.
- Alternatively, you may complete the Engineering Entrepreneurship Program sequence. In this option, you can take the courses in either a fall–spring or spring–fall order.

Course Credit and Grading
Course Credit
I have taken or plan to take a course at another college that I intend to transfer to meet an industrial and systems engineering requirement. How can I make sure the course will transfer?
- First, review the list of pre-approved transfer courses for NC Community Colleges and other universities. If the course is not listed, it must be evaluated for equivalence.
- Next, gather the required materials for evaluation. Therefore, submit a complete syllabus, textbook list and graded coursework if you already finished the class. Then, send these materials to the department that teaches the equivalent course.
- If you need help finding the correct department contact, email Kim Roberts at kdgoodwi@ncsu.edu. However, if you study abroad, contact Brian Koehler at koehler@ncsu.edu.
- After you complete the course, send an official transcript to the NC State Undergraduate Admissions Office.
- Finally, wait until the transfer credit appears on your transcript. Only then can you register for courses that require that prerequisite.
Which courses in the industrial engineering curriculum can be taken for credit only?
- First, you may take E115 and physical education (PE) courses for credit only.
- However, you must take all other courses for a grade. This rule includes all general education requirements.
Can I place out of a course (credit by examination)?
- First, know that place out exams are offered at the discretion of each department. Therefore, contact the department adviser to learn whether an exam is available.
- For math courses, contact Maitreyee Kulkarni at mckulkar@ncsu.edu.
- For physics courses, contact John Blondin at john_blondin@ncsu.edu.
- For chemistry courses, contact Phil Brown at phil_brown@ncsu.edu.

- However, you may attempt a place out exam only if you have never taken the course at the college level.
- Also, you may place out of E115 through a Credit by Examination option.
- Finally, review the university policy on credit by examination at http://policies.ncsu.edu/regulation/reg-02-50-01.
Can the course I take for my Ethics requirement double count for a GEP requirement?
- Yes, depending on the course you choose, it may also meet one other GEP requirement. However, another course must not already fulfill that requirement.
- However, you can never triple count a course in your degree audit.
Grading
How do I get a grade excluded from the calculation of my cumulative grade point average?
- First, check the Grade Exclusion section in MyPack Portal to see which courses qualify.
- However, always consult your academic advisor before you request a grade exclusion.
- Next, remember that you may exclude grades of C- or lower in up to two courses.
- Also, note that first-year retakes count toward these exclusions.
- Finally, review the full policy at http://policies.ncsu.edu/regulation/reg-02-20-16.
How many times can I repeat the same course?
- First, you may repeat a course up to two times if you earned a grade of C- or lower.
- However, you must request permission from the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs before you take the course a third time.
- Also, you cannot repeat a course if you earned a grade of C or higher.

Academic Warnings and Suspension
Academic Warnings
I have been notified that I am on academic warning and need to meet with my adviser. What should I do?
- First, schedule an appointment with an ISE academic advisor. Then, meet with the advisor to review your situation and discuss next steps.
I received an email notifying me that I am progressing toward a degree warning. What does this mean?
- First, this warning means you are not progressing in your degree as required by the university. For example, you may take too many non-curriculum courses, repeat courses too often or earn poor grades.
- Therefore, schedule a meeting with your adviser as soon as possible. Then, work together to create an agreement and plan of work for improvement.
- However, if you do not improve after one semester or fail to meet with your adviser, the department may remove you from ISE. Then, the university will move you to the Non-Degree Studies program.
- Finally, review the full university policy at http://policies.ncsu.edu/regulation/reg-02-05-03.
Suspension
How can I find out whether I am suspended or on academic warning?
- First, log in to MyPack Portal and open your Degree Audit.
- Next, click Total Units in the top right corner of the Degree Audit page.
- Then, review the bottom of the Total Units page. Your academic standing will appear there.

Internships and Co-ops
What is the difference between a co-op and an internship, and when is the best time to apply for one?
- First, a co-op is a structured, university-approved work program. Therefore, you alternate semesters of school with paid work in your field.
- During work semesters, you enroll in a zero-credit co-op course to maintain continuous enrollment.
- However, a co-op usually requires one extra semester to complete the program. In addition, this work experience can count toward a professional engineering license.
- Therefore, apply for the co-op program after you matriculate. Also, visit the co-op website for more details.
- In contrast, an internship is a short-term job in your field of study. Most students complete internships during the summer.
- Because the university does not run an internship program, you must apply for internships on your own.
- However, if you intern during a regular semester, you are considered withdrawn from school. Therefore, you must reapply to return the next semester.
- To avoid this situation, take at least one NC State course during the internship. You may take it on campus or through distance education, but it cannot be an ISE course.
- Finally, internships cannot count toward a professional engineering license. However, you may complete an internship at any time.
Can I receive course credit for an internship or engineering-related job?
- No. You cannot receive course credit for paid internships or engineering-related jobs.

Graduation
How and when do I apply for graduation?
- First, apply for graduation at the beginning of the semester or summer session when you complete your final courses.
- Then, submit a graduation request in MyPack Portal.
- Next, complete the graduation form provided by the ISE Undergraduate Office.
- After you submit the required forms, watch for email updates from the university and the department about graduation details.
Where and when are the departmental and university graduation ceremonies?
- First, review information about the university graduation ceremony at https://studentservices.ncsu.edu/your-degree/graduation/.
- Then, contact the ISE Undergraduate Office for details about the departmental graduation ceremony.

Is there a course that will help me prepare for the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and is the class required to take the exam?
- First, you may take E490 as a preparation course for the FE exam.
- However, E490 is not required to take the FE exam.
- Finally, review more information about the exam at https://www.engr.ncsu.edu/academics/undergrad/profengr/.
How do I apply for scholarships, and what are my odds of receiving one?
- First, visit the College of Engineering scholarship webpage to apply for all COE and ISE scholarships.
- However, only matriculated students are eligible for ISE and COE scholarships.
- About 15% of ISE students receive some type of COE or ISE scholarship.
- However, your chances vary each year. GPA, financial need, your personal statement and your classification all affect decisions.
- Finally, the number and value of scholarships depend on available funding each year.
I am interested in doing undergraduate research. How do I get started?
- First, consider whether you have time for research outside your classes. If you perform well in courses, research can prepare you for graduate study.
- Next, review the faculty profile pages and the ISE research pages. Then, identify faculty whose research topics interest you.
- After that, contact those faculty members and ask to meet about undergraduate research opportunities.
- Also, watch the weekly ISE email newsletter. Sometimes, it announces new undergraduate research opportunities.
I am interested in applying for graduate school in the ISE department. How can I find out more information?
- First, visit the ISE Graduate Admissions page. Then, review the information about application requirements and deadlines.
I need to reserve a classroom for a student organization-related event. Whom do I contact about this?
- First, if you are an ISE student, reserve a room in Fitts-Woolard Hall through your Google Calendar.
- However, if you have any issues, contact the ISE Help Desk at ise-helpdesk@ncsu.edu.
