Financial Aid
Is there an opportunity for me to receive financial support?
- Yes. First, the department automatically considers all applicants for financial support. Therefore, you do not need to complete a separate application.
- You may receive support through fellowships, teaching assistantships or research assistantships. For details, visit the Graduate School Financial Support page.
- In addition, the department may offer teaching or research assistantships. However, most research assistantships are awarded to Ph.D. students.
- Teaching assistantships provide a monthly salary and usually cover tuition and health insurance. However, research assistantship benefits vary by funding source.
- You may also explore other options through the Scholarships and Financial Aid Office. These options include scholarships, grants, loans and campus employment.
- Finally, financial aid offers are typically sent between late February and mid-April.

Advising
How do I schedule an appointment with an ISE advisor?
- First, if you are a new master’s student, contact Sebnem Ahiska King at ssahiska@ncsu.edu to schedule an appointment.
- However, if you are a new Ph.D. student, contact your interim advisor, Russell King, at ise-grad-director@ncsu.edu.
- If you are unsure who your advisor is, contact the ISE Graduate Office at ise-gradoffice@ncsu.edu.
What should I do if I want to enroll in a course that is currently closed and does not have space on the waitlist?
- First, contact the ISE Graduate Office at ise-gradoffice@ncsu.edu to ask about your options.
- Alternatively, you may contact the course instructor to ask whether enrollment is possible.
What should I do to substitute a course or take a course that is not listed in the curriculum or on the list of approved electives?
- First, request an exception to your Plan of Work. Then, contact the Director of Graduate Programs, Russell King, at ise-grad-director@ncsu.edu.

Registration
Who do I talk to regarding my registration?
- First, contact Registration and Records for help with registration questions. Then, call 919.515.NCSU (6278) or visit registrar.ncsu.edu for more information.
When does preregistration advising begin and how do I get advised?
- First, check the university registration calendar for official advising and registration dates: https://studentservices.ncsu.edu/calendars/.
- Next, if you are a new master’s student, contact Michael Kay at kay@ncsu.edu for advising.
- However, if you are a new Ph.D. student, contact your interim advisor, Russell King, at ise-grad-director@ncsu.edu.
- Finally, if you are unsure who your advisor is, contact the ISE Graduate Office at ise-gradoffice@ncsu.edu.
Can my ISE adviser help me get into non-ISE courses?
- No. Only administrators in the department that offers the course can add or remove you from that class. Therefore, contact the department that teaches the course for assistance.
What are the priority deadlines from the Graduate School?
- First, review the Graduate School Priority Deadlines page. There, you can find the official application deadlines for each admission term.
- Then, confirm the specific deadline that applies to your program and application term.
Holds
I have an advising hold on my account. How do I get it removed?
- First, complete the required advising paperwork, including the Academic Advisement Form.
- Then, meet with your advisor. After the meeting, your advisor can release the Advisement Term Hold.

How do I change my degree from MSIE to MIE?
- First, complete a Change of Degree Status or Curriculum Form for the Graduate School.
- Then, sign the form and send it to the ISE Graduate Office.
How do I change my degree from MSIE to Ph.D.?
- First, ask three appropriate individuals to submit Letters of Recommendation and the required forms to the ISE Graduate Office.
- Next, submit a new Statement of Purpose to the ISE Graduate Office.
- Then, complete a Change of Degree Status or Curriculum Form for the Graduate School. After that, sign the form and send it to the ISE Graduate Office.
- Finally, if you are an international student, complete the OIS Change in Curriculum/Level/Co-Major Request Form. Then, obtain the signature from the Director of IMSEI Graduate Programs. Afterward, send the form to the Graduate School and the Office of International Services.
How do I change my degree to IMSE?
- First, complete a Change of Degree Status or Curriculum Form for the Graduate School.
- Then, sign the form and send it to the ISE Graduate Office.
- Also, submit a copy of your internship offer letter with the form.
- Finally, if you are an international student, complete the OIS Change in Curriculum/Level/Co-Major Request Form. Then, obtain the signature from the Director of Graduate Programs and send the form to the ISE Graduate Office.
How do I change my degree from another department to ISE?
- First, complete a Change of Degree Status or Curriculum Form for the Graduate School. Then, sign the form and send it to the ISE Graduate Office.
- Next, ask three appropriate individuals to submit Letters of Recommendation and the required forms to the ISE Graduate Office.
- After that, submit a new Statement of Purpose and the ISE Supplemental Questions to the ISE Graduate Office.
- Finally, if you are an international student, complete the OIS Change in Curriculum/Level/Co-Major Request Form. Then, send it to the ISE Graduate Office so the Director of Graduate Programs can sign it.
What courses do I need? Where can I locate my Plan of Work (PoW)?
- First, review your Graduate Plan of Work (PoW) to see the courses required for your degree.
- Then, locate your PoW in MyPack Portal under the Graduate Student Services section.
- Finally, use your PoW as your main guide when you plan future courses and track your progress toward graduation.
I need to edit my Plan of Work (PoW). How do I make changes?
- First, email the ISE Graduate Office at ise-gradoffice@ncsu.edu.
- Then, include your name, student ID number and the subject line “Reset PoW.”
- After that, the Graduate Office will reset your Plan of Work. Then, you can update it and resubmit it for approval.
What is the procedure to submit a Reduced Course Load Request (RCL)?
- First, review the guidelines and requirements from the Office of International Services (OIS).
- Next, confirm that your Plan of Work has already been approved.
- Then, make sure you are enrolled only in courses listed on your Plan of Work for the current semester.
- Finally, complete and sign the RCL request form. After that, submit the form to the ISE Graduate Office at ise-gradoffice@ncsu.edu.
Minors
How do I declare a minor?
- First, complete a Minor Declaration Form. Then, bring the form to your minor adviser for approval. After that, the adviser will send it to Registration and Records.
- Next, check your Degree Audit in MyPack Portal. Then, confirm that the minor audit appears in your record. Your transcript will list the minor when your degree is awarded.
- Also, review minor options and adviser information at http://advising.dasa.ncsu.edu/explore-majors-minors.
- Finally, note that Ph.D. and MSIE students must declare a minor. Therefore, complete the Minor Plan section of your Plan of Work. However, MIE students do not complete a minor.

Schedule
What are the differences between distance education and regular classes?
- First, you do not need to come to campus for distance education courses. However, you may need to attend some exams. If you live out of state, you may request exam accommodations.
- Next, distance education tuition varies by session. Therefore, review current rates on the University Cashier’s Office website: http://treasurer.ofb.ncsu.edu/cashier/.
- Also, distance education courses meet the same curriculum requirements as regular courses.
- However, some on-campus courses appear as “internet” courses. These are regular courses delivered online and billed at standard tuition rates.
- Finally, if you are an on-campus graduate student, you may not take distance courses in fall or spring. However, you may take one during the summer. Then, set up an online account before you register. If you need help, contact the ISE Graduate Office at ise-gradoffice@ncsu.edu.
Can I take more than 15 credit hours in a regular semester?
- First, you may enroll in up to 15 credit hours during the fall or spring semester.
- However, if you want to take more than 15 credit hours, request approval from the Director of Graduate Programs.
- Then, complete the required forms for the Graduate School, the College of Engineering and Registration and Records.
How can I submit a request for a Reduced Course Load (RCL)?
First, complete an RCL Request form.
Then, submit the completed form for review and approval.
Courses
I want to add or drop a course after the last day to add or drop. Can I do this?
- First, review the official deadlines at https://studentservices.ncsu.edu/calendars/.
- However, if you want to add a course late, you must obtain approval from the instructor and the College of Engineering. Then, submit a schedule revision form from the College of Engineering.
- In contrast, late course drops are allowed only in certain extenuating circumstances. Therefore, submit a schedule revision form with a letter to the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs. Also, include supporting documents such as doctor or counseling notes.
- If you believe you have a valid reason for a late drop, first consult the University Counseling Center.
- Finally, review the university policy on late drops at http://policies.ncsu.edu/regulation/reg-02-05-04.
I’m an ISE graduate student but I want to take MBA courses. What should I do?
- First, complete the Petition to Add MBA Courses Form.
- Then, submit the completed form for review and approval.

Graduation
How and when do I apply for graduation?
- First, apply for graduation through MyPack Portal.
- Then, submit your request during the semester when you plan to complete your degree requirements.
- After that, watch for email updates from the ISE Graduate Office with additional graduation information.

How and when should I apply for North Carolina residency?
- First, review residency requirements and application steps at the residence status website.
- Then, follow the instructions for domestic out-of-state students to submit your residency application.
What do the acronyms ABM, MR (MIE), MIE/DE, MSIE and Ph.D. stand for?
- ABM: Accelerated Bachelor’s–Master’s program. You take master’s courses while completing your bachelor’s degree.
- MR (MIE): Master of Industrial Engineering. This program does not require a thesis.
- MIE/DE: Master of Industrial Engineering through Distance Education. Also, this program does not require a thesis.
- MSIE: Master of Science in Industrial Engineering. However, this program requires a thesis.
- Ph.D.: Doctor of Philosophy in Industrial Engineering.
I am a Teaching Assistant or Research Assistant and I need to contact Aetna about my health insurance. What should I do?
- First, contact Aetna Health Concierge (Member Services) at 1.800.233.1335. They are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET.
- Next, if you need pharmacy assistance, contact CVS Caremark at 1.888.297.7215.
- Also, you may contact Aetna Student Health at 1.800.841.3156 for student health insurance questions.
- If you have questions about campus billing or coverage, email studentinsurance@ncsu.edu.
What is Optional Practical Training (OPT), and how do I apply?
- First, understand that OPT allows F-1 students to work off campus in their field of study. You may use it during or after your program.
- Next, carefully review the OPT information on the OIS website: https://internationalservices.ncsu.edu/student-employment/optional-practical-training/.
- Then, complete the OPT application form. After that, email the completed form to ise-gradoffice@ncsu.edu. Do not fill in the DGP signature section.
- The Graduate Services Coordinator will obtain the Director of Graduate Programs signature. Then, the office will return the form to you so you can submit it to OIS.
- However, your DGP will not approve the application unless your Graduate Plan of Work has already been submitted and approved.
- Finally, if you have a job offer letter, send it with your OPT application. If not, send the letter to ise-gradoffice@ncsu.edu as soon as you receive it.
What is Curricular Practical Training (CPT), and how do I apply?
- First, understand that CPT allows F-1 students to work off campus in their field of study. However, the work must be a required or integral part of the curriculum.
- For example, CPT may support thesis or dissertation research. It may also apply to cooperative education programs in your field.
- Next, review the CPT information on the OIS website: https://internationalservices.ncsu.edu/curricular-practical-training/.
- Then, complete the CPT application form according to the OIS instructions.
- If you are a non-thesis master’s student, select Semra Ahiska King as your advisor on the application.
- However, if you are a thesis master’s or Ph.D. student, select your faculty advisor instead.
- Finally, submit the required CPT report at the end of your training. Send the report to the appropriate advisor, including Ahiska King for non-thesis master’s students.
