Graduate Admissions
Get the admissions information you need to join NC State and earn your industrial engineering graduate degree.
Last Updated: 03/03/2026 | All information is accurate and still up-to-date
We welcome applications from undergraduate majors in engineering. In addition, we encourage students with degrees in the behavioral, physical and mathematical sciences to apply. As a result, you can join our program from a range of academic backgrounds.
To prepare for graduate study, you should have experience in several key areas. For example, you need a background in mathematics, including calculus and matrix or linear algebra. In addition, you should have experience in computer science. Most entry level graduate courses also require knowledge of statistics.
Experience in the physical, behavioral and management sciences such as economics, business or accounting is desirable. Therefore, coursework in these areas can strengthen your preparation.
The Graduate School at NC State manages the university-level application process. To be considered for admission to one of our master’s or Ph.D. programs, follow the required university and department procedures carefully.

Prerequisites
To succeed in the program, you may need additional preparation if your background is outside industrial engineering. Therefore, we may recommend remedial coursework to strengthen your foundation.
Undergraduate experience in statistics and operations research will be especially helpful. For example, courses similar to the following can prepare you for graduate study:
- ST 371 Introduction to Probability and Distribution Theory
- ST 372 Introduction to Statistical Inference and Regression
- ISE 361 Deterministic Models in Industrial Engineering
If this situation applies to you, contact the Director of Graduate Programs for guidance. In addition, reach out if you have questions about prerequisites. By clarifying expectations early, you can plan your coursework and begin the program with confidence.
Criteria for Admission
GPA
You should have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in your previous academic programs. However, competitive applicants often exceed this minimum.
GRE
Although we do not set minimum GRE scores, admitted students typically earn strong results. For example, recent averages include a Verbal score of 153, a Quantitative score of 164 and an Analytical score of 3.6.
Use NC State Institution Code 5496 when sending GRE scores. In addition, use ISE Department Code 1301 or 1399. ISE PRO TIP: We do not offer GRE waivers.
For current TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo and other requirements, review NC State’s Admission of Non-U.S. Citizens page.
Letters of Recommendation
You must submit three letters of recommendation. In addition, some letters should come from former professors who can evaluate your academic preparation.
As a guide, a recent entering class of about 60 students reported the following averages: GPA 3.45, GRE Verbal 154, GRE Quantitative 160 and GRE Analytical 3.5. For international students, the average TOEFL score was 101.
ISE PRO TIP: ISE admission requirements are more rigorous than those of the Graduate School.
